Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
