A recent study indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
